New arrivals for Autumn

As the evenings are quickly getting darker and the leaves are starting to fall from the trees, it definitely feels like it is time to get those needles and hooks out of the closet and start thinking about Christmas presents. Winter yarns have started to arrive in the shop, including a re-stock of Malabrigo Rastita (Sport weight / 285m, Single Ply, Merino ) – the shop now stocks 13 colours.

It is very hard to resist Malabrigo’s very soft and beautiful hand dyed yarns, they are perfect for quick and last minute gifts. This is a free scarf pattern by Lisa Bruce on Ravelry, which is extremely easy to remember and very effective for highly variegated yarns. One skein of the Rastita is enough for a scarf measuring about 140cm.

As the school summer holidays are upon us already, the shop will be closed for a week from Friday 27th June and re-opening on Tuesday, 8th July, as I will be on vacation down in Cornwall with the family.

See you next Saturday in Marchmont, near the Meadows!

Recent new products in the shop – part 1 – Sock Yarns

For a new yarn shop, there are just so many exciting brands and possibilities to choose from. In recent weeks, we have seen the arrival of Schoppel Wolle’s range of colourful Zauberballs, which have been a great hit with locals in the Marchmont area.

Zauberballs come in lace, sock and DK weights, a selection of each are currently available in the shop.

Crazy Zauberball

The Crazy Zauberballs are proving to be the most popular and as they are machine washable, they are not only great for socks but also for children’s clothing.

Brier Toque

I couldn’t wait to knit up a ball and made a simple beanie to showcase the gentle and wonderful colour changes, there was enough yarn left over to make a pair of mittens.

Jawoll Sock Yarns

Jawoll Sock Yarns

Sock yarns are ever so popular and Jawoll Sock Yarns by the Swiss yarn company Lang include a reel of nylon to strengthen the toe and heel. The solid colours provide a contrast but also complement self striping and variegated socks well.  I will be adding more colours to this range in future, so watch this space!

New yarn shop opening in Marchmont, Edinburgh

    Believe and Achieve

A modern yarn shop concept quickly became a reality about 8 weeks ago, when I stumbled upon an office/shop unit, belonging to Albany Lettings in the Marchmont area of Edinburgh, near my kids’ school.

30 Marchmont Road

I have been searching for a studio to rent in the area for months, but things just didn’t work out. I never gave up hope of finding the right space in the right location and which was within my budget. I’d put out feeders and asked around, monitored gumtree at least 20 times a day!

So I was extremely lucky that 30 Marchmont Road appeared and fitted my criteria perfectly and I was ever so grateful and relieved that the landlord agreed to lease the unit to me after it was refurbished.

Front windows

I have to say that the shop looks amazing, it is bright and open with high lofty ceilings and big windows which are perfect for capturing the wonderful colours of the yarns.

Ground Floor
Setting up a shop, requires a certain amount of determination and hard graft, there are always going to be set backs and obstacles, but you just have to continue to believe in your business plan and goals. There is also a lot of luck involved, but if you do your research and continue to be positive, you are more likely to take advantage of those little opportunities that come your way.

Starting up a new business – online

There is never a good time to start up your business, sometimes, you just have to go for it and to just simply get on with it.  These days you don’t have to sink a fortune into a retail or office space.  You can just start up an online business and be based anywhere at home or in a coffee shop.  It is amazing how technology, the internet and social media have transformed the business landscape and how we work.

My virtual office

My virtual office

For the past few months, I have been working on getting the structures together, the web site, the blog, the online shop, registering the company, sorting out a business bank account, researching suppliers and customers.

I must not forget, I am also still a house wife, so I still have to do the school run, escort the kids to their extra curricular activities, cook dinner, do the washing and the ironing, plus cleaning. It is a real juggling and balancing act!

Having the right attitude is crucial, life is about learning and I am enjoying the journey and the challenge.  I still have a lot to learn, but I have never been much of a techie, but putting together this blog, website and all the other social media tools has been very interesting, especially, as I am on a very limited budget and I am doing it by myself.

Being a knitter has really helped, as we know there are always a solution to a problem and we enjoy figuring things out, but also as a member of a few knitting groups, there is always someone who can help and fill in the missing pieces.

Social media and networking

Be Inspired Fibres

Be Inspired Fibres

Without a physical presence, an online business has to rely on other means of reaching people. Online social media is great for spreading the word, but it is also important to physically meet and see prospective customers to understand their preferences. I am therefore really grateful for the opportunity to exhibit at the Edinburgh Yarn Festival in a few weeks time. Shop update

Just in time for the Edinburgh show, the online shop is now opened for browsing and shopping. I can only do minor tweaks on the web site, but the tictail online shop solution, I am using is perfect, because of its simplicity and especially for a start-up like me.
